1 This combined Jeweler's Lathe I and II class was taught by Russ Aikins assisted by Bill Andrle. The classroom is at our new location at the Founder's Building in Grapevine, TX. The students shown in this photo left to right are LaNell Stover, Larry Clamon, Hugh Slough and John Acker. Also taking the class but off the edge of the photo were Jeff Waguespack and Kelvyn Gipp. Both LaNell and Larry were taking Lathe I; the other 4 were taking lathe II.
As far as the Lathe I and II being a combined class it has a natural flow anyway. Lathe II is a continuation of Lathe I with more advanced projects. With assistance from Bill Andrle this is possible to conduct both at the same time. Everyone seemed to be happy with the results.
The students in Lathe I are taught features of the Jewelers lathe and how to maintain it. They make hand gravers and use these tools to cut and fit a brass wheel on an arbor to be used for sanding or sharpening. They make staking punches and heat treat them.
In Lathe II the focus is learning to find the center of an arbor for drilling and re-pivoting work. They make an arbor with a new pivot using two separate parts that are provided.
